Theravada meditation methods.






There are 40 samatha meditation methods in Theravada Buddhism. Those are as follows.

·         Dasa kasina. – Ten Kasina.
·         Dasa asubha. – Ten Foulness.
·         Dasa anussathi. – Ten Recollections.
·         Sathara brahma vihara. – Four Divine Abidings.
·         Sathara aruppa. -  Four Immaterial States.
·         Chathudhathu vavattana. – Definition of the Four Elements
·         Patikkula sanya. - Perception of Repulsiveness in Nutriment


(01).  Dasa Kasina – Ten Kasina.

1)      Patavi - The Earth Kasina.
2)      Apo – The Water Kasina.
3)      Thejo – The Fire Kasina.
4)      Vayo – The Air Kasina.
5)      Nila - The Blue Kasina.
6)      Pitha – The Yellow Kasina.
7)      Lohitha – The Red Kasina.
8)      Odath – The White Kasina.
9)      Aloka – The Light Kasina.
10)  Akasa – The Limited-Space Kasina.

(02). Dasa asubha -  Ten Foulness.

1)      Uddumathaka – The Bloated.
2)      Vinilaka – The Livid.
3)      Vipubbaka – The Festering.
4)      Vichchiddaka – The Cut Up.
5)      Vikkayithaka – The Gnawed.
6)      Vikkitthaka – The Scattered.
7)      Hathavikkiththaka – The Hacked and Scattered.
8)      Lohithaka – The Bleeding.
9)      Pulavaka – The Worm–Infested.
10)  Attika – The Skeleton.

(03). Dasa anussathi. – Ten Recollections.

1)      Buddhanussathi - Recollection of the Enlightened one.
2)      Dhammanussathi – Recollection of the Dhamma.
3)      Sanghanussathi – Recollection of the Sangha.
4)      Seelanussthai - Recollection of virtue.
5)      Chaganussathi – Recollection of Generosity.
6)      Devathanussathi – Recollection of Deities.
7)      Marananussathi – Mindfulness of Death.
8)      Kayagathasathi – Mindfulness Occupied with the Body.
9)      Anapanasathi – Mindfulness of Breathing.
10)  Upasamanussathi – Recollection of peace.

(04). Sathara brahma vihara – Four Divine Abidings.

1)      Metta – Loving-Kindness.
2)      Karuna – Compassion.
3)      Muditha – Gladness.
4)      Upekkha – Equanimity.

(05). Sathara aruppa – Four Immaterial States.

1)      The Base Consisting of Boundless Space.
2)      The Base Consisting of Boundless Consciousness.
3)      The Base Consisting of Nothingness.
4)      The Base Consisting of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception.

(06). Chathudathu vavattana – Defining of the Four Elements.

(07). Patikkula sanya – Perception of Repulsiveness in Nutriment.

The vipassana method is can be used from all of these methods.
